Since 2012, Steel Heart Tattoo has been striving to give every client the best custom work possible through collaboration in a clean, calm, friendly environment.
My name is Jay Ripley. I've been drawing since a I was in elementary school, with an early appreciation for the individuality and craftsmanship of art made by hand. My influences span a variety of styles and mediums, from graffiti and classical painting to anime and comic books.
After getting my first tattoo and discovering the world of tattooing, I knew it was a direction I wanted to pursue. I was drawn to the unique responsibility that comes with creating art on skin: the permanence of the work, the trust involved, and the opportunity to create something meaningful alongside another person.
I've been tattooing since 2009 and opened my own studio, Steel Heart Tattoo, in 2012. From the beginning, my goal has been to create a more personal approach to tattooing, one that prioritizes quality, thoughtful design, and collaboration over simply moving from one appointment to the next. I believe every tattoo deserves the time and attention needed to make it a piece worth carrying for a lifetime.
Outside of work I’m an avid gym-goer and a tree hugger. I compete in grip competitions, strongman events, OCRs, and the occasional ninja warrior course. I enjoy the outdoors, making time to go visit champion trees in VA, and telling clients about the unique big trees in Harrisonburg.
